NFL Survivor Pool Picks Week 10: Opening Line Report

Week 9 was the perfect example of why you should always wait until the last possible minute or deadline to submit any kind of NFL office pool picks. I am travelling this week and put my Week 9 picks in early. Houston -13 over Indianapolis was one of my top picks for Survivor Pools, NFL Confidence Pools and also my against the spread picks. I turned most of my picks in on Wednesday due to a busy week. On Thursday Texans QB Deshaun Watson was lost for the season after a major injury in practice. In one ATS contest it was too late to remove my pick on Houston and that loss ruined what could have been a great week as I went 4-2-1 even with the loss. Thankfully I was able to change our Houston pick in the Las Vegas SuperContest since the proxy hadn’t submitted our picks yet. Once those lines are released they don’t move, so we actually took Indianapolis +13 as the line had moved down to six, and of course the Colts pulled the upset against a demoralized team.

Besides that game there were two more decent upsets in the Jets beating the Bills on Thursday and the Redskins notching a road win at Seattle. I warned against those two favorites in my Opening Line Report last week.

Week 10 NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Opening Lines

Seattle -5.5 at Arizona (Thursday): That this line opened at only 5.5 shows about how much confidence the oddsmakers have for the Seahawks on the road. I have similar low faith in then in this spot. Arizona is a really bad team, especially with their current QB issues. But I just can’t trust the Seahawks to get the job done here. And I always warn Survivor Pool players away from these Thursday games. The Bills/Jets contest last week was a perfect example of how home-field advantage and a short week of preparation can even the talent deficit in these quick turnaround games.

Pittsburgh -10 at Indianapolis: I am always wary of picking the Steelers away from home. This team has the tendency to play down to the level of outmatched opponents sometimes on the road. However, the Colts are really bad despite lucking (pun intended) into some wins this season. The Steelers are off their bye here, and I think it is pretty safe to trust them in this situation if they are still available in your pool. I just can’t see Pittsburgh losing this one off their bye.

Jacksonville -4 vs. LA Chargers: I think the Jaguars are very legit. They were one of my top recommendations last week for Survivor Pools against Cincinnati and they looked great in a blowout win. They face a better opponent here on Sunday but, depending on which teams you have already used, this might be the point in the season when you have to gamble with a smaller favorite like this. I do like this Jacksonville squad and think they will win here. But the Chargers are coming in off their bye but this team is really inconsistent and when they are on they can beat any team in the league on any given Sunday.

Tennessee -5 vs. Cincinnati: I am still pissed at Tennessee as we went with them in the big contest and they gave up late points to the Ravens and failed to cover. I’m just not a big believer in the Titans. But this is a pretty good team and they are 3-1 at home thus far. I think this team is still a year away from playoff contention and favor the Jags in the AFC South, but I guess with the Watson injury that it’s now a two-team race between those squads. I can’t make any big argument against the Titans this week because Cincinnati stinks, but I do get a bad gut feeling about this game.

Detroit -9.5 vs. Cleveland: As I write this the Lions are about to suit up for their Monday Night Football matchup at Green Bay. If they look good in that game and come out of it healthy then they certainly would be a solid Survivor Pool pick for Week 10. Because they will be on a short week here would be one cause for concern. And the Browns are coming off their bye. But Cleveland just looks really bad this season. Even though I am very confident they will win a game at some point this year, I don’t think that this will be the one.

LA Rams -11.5 vs. Houston: What a shame about the Watson injury as this would have been an awesome matchup with the rookie behind center for the Texans. I wonder what the total would have looked like as both of these teams could have conceivably put up 40 points in this matchup. However, with Watson out the Rams become the clear favorite in this matchup. The Texans looked totally deflated in their home loss to Indy, and the horrible QB play of backup Tom Savage put on full display why the QB position is the most important on the field. The Rams probably haven’t been used yet, and they are a very solid pick for NFL Survivor Pools this week.

New England -7.5 at Denver: Most have probably used the Patriots already. If not, this is as good of a week as any! They are off their bye and against a team that they have a nice rivalry against. But the Broncos are a mess at QB, and it looks like the defense may have given up on the season after seeing them surrender 50+ points to the Eagles on Sunday.

Carolina -9 vs. Miami (Monday): It looks like the Panthers are very legit this season. I was really impressed with their win on Sunday against a desperate Falcons team. They are now 6-3 and near the top of the NFC South. Miami played better than I thought they would on Sunday night vs. the Raiders. I thought that game had a chance for a blowout. But I think the Dolphins are overmatched here. If you are considering taking the Panthers be sure to put your picks in as late as possible in case there is another major injury in practice!
