NFL Confidence Pools are tough. You have to rank picks from the strongest to weakest, so they are not like your typical office pool where you just pick the winner of each game. There is more strategy involved. But that gives a better chance for a win for those that really put some work into it and make the best picks each week.

We always recommend using upsets sparingly. Only strongly rate upset picks if you are very sure about the matchups. If you are way behind in your pool in the final weeks of the season then that is a time when you want to be more aggressive. But playing these conservative is the way to go. If you make good picks and are conservative you should be in striking distance to the prize at the end of the season.

Analysis: New England is going to be among my top picks every week as this team is not going to lose many games this season, if any, and this is the best team in the NFL in my eyes. Even though the Packers have a lot of injuries right now, so do the Bears, and I think Green Bay will get revenge tonight for that Bears rare win in Lambeau last season. I don’t have any big upsets going this week, although maybe San Diego over Atlanta qualifies. But I think this will be a chalky week for the big favorites and a lot of the smaller-spread games are tossups. I am tempted to pick a Browns upset over Cincinnati but so many competitors will be on Cincy here and I think they will probably win a close game so it’s too risky.

Analysis: New England is once again the top play of the week with Big Ben out with an injury. Even though it is in Pittsburgh, you never like starting a backup QB vs. the defensive mind Bill Belichick. It also looks like Tom Brady is just getting warmed up. Watch out NFL. Not a lot of upset picks this week, but we are taking a conservative risk with the San Francisco 49ers over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both teams are limited, with Tampa being a little weaker in the secondary. We think San Francisco has a chance to sneak out a win.
