Expert Super Bowl Prop Picks: Best Odds on the Board for Proposition Wagers

Prop bets, or Proposition bets, are available for just about any sporting event. For those that are new to wagering on sports, a Prop bet is a wager on a player performance like in fantasy football or overall team performance for example whether or not the Patriots as a team will rush for more than 100 yards in the game.

Prop bets are particularly interesting and fun during the Super Bowl. During the 1992 Super Bowl the Dallas Cowboys were set to take on the Buffalo Bills. The Cowboys were a heavy favorite, and the game was not very entertaining unless you were a Cowboy fan or if you placed a prop bet on whether or not Michael Jordan would outscore the Dallas team.

With all apologies to Ms. Menzel, I’m not familiar with her work. However, if you are looking for an angle, both Kelly Clarkson and Christina Aguilera sang the National Anthem in less than 2 minutes. Looks like under is the play here.

Sticking with the musical performers Prop Bets, you may want to ask you household Katy Perry fan what song she will sing first during the halftime show. Current odds are “Firework” 3/2, “Roar” 3/2, “This Is How We Do” 5/1, “Dark Horse” 12/1, “E.T.” 12/1, “Wide Awake” 12/1, “Last Friday Night” 14/1, “Waking Up In Vegas “20/1. I will go with “Roar” as I think it suits the theme of the game.

Katy Perry and New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick are both known for their fashion sense, with Perry being known for her outrageous outfits and Bill Belichick being known for his sleeveless hoodie. If you would like to place a prop bet on Perry’s fashion, you can play “What will Katy Perry be wearing when she begins the halftime show?” Skirt or Dress 4/5, Pants (below knees) 2/1, Shorts (above knees) 2/1. Bill Belichick fashion prop bets include Which Color will Bill Belichick’s hoodie be? Grey 1/2, Blue 7/4, Red 7/1 as well as what will be Bill Belichick’s Hoodie Type be? Sleeves Cut -140 (5/7), Sleeves Intact EVEN (1/1). I for one will go with the sleeves intact on this one.

Want to involve politics in your Super Bowl? Props bets will allow that, too. Look for the “Who will Barack Obama pick to the win the Game?” Prop Bet: Seattle -140 (5/7), New England EVEN (1/1). My guess is the Commander in Chief selects the Seattle Seahawks. The president cannot select the Patriots after deflate gate even if he really thinks the Patriots will win.

Now onto some of the traditional prop bet opportunities. Total TD Passes – Tom Brady (NE) Over 2 (+120) Under 2 (-150). At first glance this looks like a no brainer Over 2, but in the blowout win vs the Colts Brady threw only three touchdown passes. I believe this to be a very tough bet and more likely to be push then over or under 2 Touchdowns.

Sticking with the Quarterbacks, I like the over for Total Rushing Yards – Russell Wilson (SEA) Over/Under: 40½. New England has a very strong secondary, and I expect them to take perennial All-Pro Darrell Revis and put him one-on-one with the Seahawks No. 2 WR Jermaine Kearse and double team the Seahawks No. 1 WR Doug Baldwin. This means Wilson, who is a very skillful runner, will have to scramble and run a bit more than usual

Turning to the running game, your prop bet options include Total Rushing Yards – LeGarette Blount (NE) Over/Under: 62½ and Total Rushing Yards – Marshawn Lynch (SEA) Over/Under: 92½.. Lynch and Blount are both big, physical running backs. However, they are prone to long runs or chunk yardage. The Patriots do not have a stout run defense even though it appeared that way vs the Indianapolis Colts. You only have to go back one week before to see that the Patriots allowed 129 yards to Justin Forsett of the Baltimore Ravens. The Seahawks do have a much better run defense. However, it will take only one long run for Blount to get to 62 ½ mark. I recommend playing over the total for both these prop bets.
